Celebrating Spring Break

Every day Sam waits (if he is up from his nap) for the kids to get home from school. He calls out their names with glee as they come in the front door. Emma was really ON TOP today as she is so excited to be on spring break over the next week. Sam does not get the "spring break thing" yet but he is always game for fun and having his brothers and sisters around!

Car wins RACE!

Nate is in Scouts and they had his Pinewood Derby today...he said it was one of the "Best days of his life" as he came in first place and will advance to the next race. He made a car at school and then he and Gramps put another car together here at home. The one pictured is the one he made at home...his car from school won the race so will have to wait until after the finals for a photo! Nate is VERY good with his hands and has a creative side too so he spends HOURS (and I do mean HOURS) sitting at his desk making models, lego's, erector sets, etc. He gets all pumped up for Pinewood Derby every year.

Puddle Jumpin'

Lots and lots of rain has brought some GREAT puddles and if there is a large (or small) puddle the Kinney Kids will FIND IT!! The kids romped and played in this puddle for a long time and somehow managed NOT to fall completely into it! We walked (cause those muddy kids were not getting in my van!)to the Dairy Isle to get some ice cream and WHAT a MOTLEY crew we were covered in mud!

Shootin' HOOPS!

Mitchell and Emma are both playing Upward basketball and enjoying it so much. They both are turning out to be great defensive players. Our camera does not take the best action photos but I caught a few moments of the excitement. It is fun to watch them in action! Emma plays with a combination of 1st and 2nd grade girls and Mitchell plays with 3rd and 4th grade boys.

A Happy St. Patrick's Day To Ya!

May the road rise to meet you;
May the wind be always at your back;
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
The rains fall softly upon your fields;
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Love,
The Kinney Gang!

Court of Honor

Nate is in Boy Scouts and today they had their bi-annual Court of Honor where they present their badges. Nate really enjoys all the activities. Once a month he spends a day at an outdoor camp where he is learning all kinds of outdoor skills. They build fires, canoe, kayak, search for food in nature, and shoot bows and arrows. Nate is in his ELEMENT when he is outdoors! He is preparing right now for his Derby car races. The ceremony was VERY crowded so Madeleine snuck up front and took this photo!

Aaaaahhhh, HARMONY!

We have a step stool in our kitchen. On a daily basis it is dragged all over the room to reach the Cheerios, to get an ice cube, to wash off dishes to reach a juice cup...it is highly used...AND is often the source of fighting between Madeleine and Sam. They seem to both need it at the SAME time all the time! It is also a perfect little seat for their tiny derriere's! Well, today they sat on it in harmony and THAT is worth a phototograph!
I just LOVE those smiles!

Spring???

An amazingly beautiful day outside! Although, we looked at the forecast and it does NOT look good for the rest of the week! We better get out and ENJOY it RIGHT NOW!! Our house is the hub for outdoor play! There are only a couple of other neighborhood kids and they all hook up when the weather is good!

An interesting night...

Our family has been deeply effected by our attendance at our church in innercity Springfield. We have been overwhemed by the incredible needs of our people and we have been even more blessed by their love and willingness to accept us as friends. When I look at our group of kids and see their brown, black, and white faces I feel tears of gratitude that God has given us this diverse group to belong to as I have never been a part of such beautiful diversity. It was a HUGE decision for Bob and I to move our family from our "poshy" and somewhat safe, middle class church to an innercity church which has never known "poshy" even at its best. We have all been stretched and stretched some more as we do our best to serve our neighbors.

This past Saturday night we were running on very low "staff" as it is spring break for our local university and we rely heavily on student help. We all went to church knowing it would be a BUSY and tiring night. We had a dear woman, "Deena" who came in seeking help as she was being abused by her husband. Each week brings a family or friend in need of something...we can offer them dinner but only God can provide them with what they REALLY need. God put our group and resources into action and we were able to find a safe place for "Deena" and she will be able to receive proper help and counseling tomorrow. We also have our regulars from the neighborhood who rarely get a home cooked meal and are so pleased to sit and eat and have a conversation...we look forward to seeing them each week. Satan is always ready and waiting in those drafty corners to discourage us and defeat our good intentions but we remind each other to hold on to our knowledge that we know God needs us at Midtown.

Our children see that many of our neighbors do not have cars, beds to sleep on or do not have drywall on their walls, some do not even have electricity, they KNOW it is not safe to walk anywhere by themselves as our neighborhood turns into a drug infested area after dark...but what they DO SEE is that these friends want what we want...the love and acceptance of Christ. People say, "nothing is free" but we have the good news of Jesus Christ and it is ABSOLUTELY FREE!! After an exhausting night we came home to decompress and thank God for pushing us to show up each week and help our dear friends, even if it is just sharing a cup of "not so great" coffee.
