HAPPY TRICKS AND TREATS!!!!

OH! Our family adores Halloween! The decorations, the fall activities, games, pumpkins, CANDY, dressing up!! We started our fun last night at Uncle Bruce and Aunt Karen Sue's as they had Trick or Treat the night before our community! We didn't go to T & T but to hang out on their porch with their whole family and enjoy all the little kids dressed up! Thanks for such an awesome time...Bruce and Karen Sue KNOW how to do Halloween up RIGHT!!!!!!!!!

Sam is not a big talker (at least not yet) but what he DOES do, is sing...and he gets caught up in ONE song for DAYS on end...he breaks out in song EVERYWHERE and ANYTIME and the older kids encourage him at first but then after awhile of the SAME song they begin to GROAN and BEG him to sing no longer!!

The girls will say:
STOP THE MADNESS!!!!

Well, this is Sam's latest song and just the other day was singing it QUITE loudly all through Walmart...HEY! He is soooooo much fun!!

We will be Tricking and Treating TONIGHT!!!!!!
Enjoy your family!

FALL FUN?? NO way!!

Today was at least the fourth VERY cold morning in a row! The kids get up and dress FIRST and then come down for breakfast. They have ALL been in denial about the fact that it is cold outside. This a.m...it was about 28 degrees and as I awakened them I told them..."it is freezing...wear something warm today...put a t-shirt on under that..." You get the picture...they still trickled down in summer dress for the most part. Short sleeves, shorts, flip flops...there comes a time when I as their mother must step back and say NO MORE and let them make their own decision...TO FREEZE their TOOSHIES OFF!! Well, I have to admit I was SMUG when we stepped out on the porch to wait for the school bus and they ALL were shivering and jumping and exclaiming about seeing their breath! YET! They STILL resisted another layer...perhaps a heavier jacket?

SO! After school we did the ANNUAL KINNEY TRY ON EXTRAVAGANZA!!!!! Just like you, they all groaned and moaned at the idea of trying on winter clothes but TRY ON THEY DID!! The good news? They have all grown significantly! The BAD news? I need to find some serious jeans and sweatshirts for school!!!! Actually we are in pretty great shape for the winter and are blessed to have plenty to wear!

Hearing the Call

I am taking one day a week and posting about a child or children in need of a home. Today please visit Starfish Babies. I ask that you join me in praying specifically for a family/home for these children. Thanks so much for lifting these precious children up to the Lord...his ultimate plan will be revealed to us in his good time. If you do not know the Legend of the Starfish...please read on...

The Legend of the Starfish

A vacationing businessman was walking along a beach when he saw a young boy.
Along the shore were many starfish that had been washed up by the tide and were sure to die before the tide returned.
The boy walked slowly along the shore and occasionally reached down and tossed the beached starfish back into the ocean.
The businessman, hoping to teach the boy a little lesson in common sense, walked up to the boy and said, "I have been watching what you are doing, son.
You have a good heart, and I know you mean well, but do you realize how many beaches there are around here and how many starfish are dying on every beach every day. Surely such an industrious and kind hearted boy such as yourself could find something better to do with your time.
Do you really think that what you are doing is going to make a difference?"
The boy looked up at the man, and then he looked down at a starfish by his feet. He picked up the starfish, and as he gently tossed it back into the ocean, he said, "It makes a difference to that one”.

Just too beautiful...

A lovely mom waiting for her sweet Russian Princess to come home had this on her blog...I just love it.

Every call has a beginning
A quiet moment when God
whispers a promise to a mother’s heart
A holy place where a father bows and faithfully accepts
the journey set before him.
A miraculous morning that unexpectedly dawns…
Casting its first light on a chosen threshold.
A gentle knock..a closed door opens.
A sacred invitation sent by the Father..
Leads to the other side of the world.
Where lonely hearts stare out orphanage windows
Praying for someone to care..
And then one morning,
On an ordinary day
An orphan’s life changes...
God sends them a second chance...Through you..

Guest blogger today...

Today I am joining you from the sixth grade where I am learning a great deal of VERY IMPORTANT things. My science teacher, Mr. Wagner, showed us this educational video that I would like to share with you. I hope you learn as much as I did.

I've been tagged...

I was tagged by Betsy at My Five Men for The Fourth of the Fourth! The idea is that you go to your picture file and choose the 4th picture in the 4th file.
I was a bit worried about WHAT that photo could be and BEFORE I looked at it I promised myself I would ACTUALLY POST the 4th of fourth! I was pleasantly surprised to see that the entire file is of my little ones (they sure have GROWN since this photo!) on March 16th, 2003! I took TWELVE snap shots that day trying to get a good one of all four of them...it was too sunny and they are all "squinty."

And I now tag my bloggy friend Ohilda at A Bouquet of Blessings to show us
her 4th of the 4th! And don't forget to check out Betsy's picture! It's a good one!

Emma Boo

I found my eyes brimming with tears today...not a typical thing for me. Emma had a doctor's appointment. I like to make appointments for the kids mid morning to have the opportunity to hang out with them a little in the a.m. and then we try to grab a hot chocolate afterward to chat without everyone else around. We had such a nice time over our hot chocolate and cinnamon roll from our local coffee cafe'. Emma tends to be a quiet young lady outside of the house...get her alone or simply at home and she tells me the most delightful stories. I have my radar on high alert with this youngster as she is sensitive, intuitive, and can stuff her feelings deep inside. When it was time to get back to school I pulled up along the entrance and watched as this sweet girl lovingly kissed her baby brother and her Mama then walked up the sidewalk to the school...her own world of academia, social relationships and activities...

When did her legs get soooo long?
How is it that she is nine years old?
When did she STOP looking like a child and is NOW looking very pre-teenish?

I was filled with such thankfulness for this little girl that God has entrusted to me. I am overwhelmed at the responsibility that Bob and I have in raising her. We are so blessed to be a part of her daily life and that of her siblings.

The vicious circle

Ever have one of those nights when you really MUST get a good night's rest as you have a particularly busy, taxing or strenuous next day and you simply CANNOT sleep?? Of course you do! As I lay in bed the VICIOUS circle begins...I look at the clock and worry that I must get to sleep and then the anxiety sets in that I only have 6 more hours, four more hours, three more hours until the alarm goes off and I KNOW I will be exhausted yet sleep does not come! Having a preschooler, I also find myself with little children's songs in my head that I do not like!!! UGH!! A mother goose rhyme...not so bad but much worse than that a potty training song that Sam STILL sings long after finishing his training! I am not prone to insomnia...in fact, I sleep very well most nights. I envy my husband on a regular basis as he is one of "those people" that gets by with very little sleep and does not miss it!

So, I am curious...what do you do?? Do you drink warm milk? Do get up and do that laundry that you know is waiting for you?

Oh, and PLEASE let me entertain you with one of Sam's favorite songs to sing ANYTIME and ANYWHERE that oftentimes goes through my head at 4a.m.!!

It is SOOOOOO worth it!

Although we hesitate to commit to another thing...and we want to preserve as much family time as we can...I am so very grateful that Bob and Greg could coach this fall. Madeleine could not have been more thrilled to have her Daddy be her coach. Bob is a soccer ENTHUSIAST at the top notch level but with long hours at work and then wanting time with the kids at home it truly is a sacrifice for him to commit to coaching. Congrats to Madeleine's Soccer Team....they had their last game at tournament on Sunday ending up their season! It was a learning year for this group of 6, 7 and 8 year olds and although they did not have a winning season, they had FUN!! Just look at the faces of these silly girls! Bob and Greg make an entertaining team...especially when trying to motivate this group who love to play leap frog, turn cart wheels and chat about recess during practice! Thanks Bob and Greg for investing in these little ones!

IT IS SOOOOOOOO WORTH IT!!

Please think and pray for our election...

A dear Mama from A Bouquet of Blessings created this graphic...I asked her permission to use it here to share with you...it is absolutely profound.

Ohilda writes:
I created it because I believe a visual may help people realize how our country, the greatest nation in the world, truly disregards the value of human life. Very sad. Especially when you know that over 1,000,000 (ONE MILLION!) babies are aborted (killed) annually in the U.S. alone!

Thank you, Ohilda for your passion!

Please read on for some words from Patty:

I have this burning need to tell someone what is on my heart. Please pray that the Lord would reign and that His children would follow the voice He puts in their hearts.
My sisters and one of my daughters are a direct result of women who chose life. I sympathize with the vulnerable women who have to make these difficult decisions, I see them ALL THE TIME in my work. As a social worker, I vote that we give the babies a voice. I vote that we create a loving culture for their birth moms. I vote that we fill the arms of the countless barren women with these voiceless children. I work with these women too. Once I was one of those barren women...now I kiss my miracle every night. I am eternally thankful for her birth mother and that she had the support to give her daughter, our daughter, the choice to live. I can not get past this issue.......please let it settle in your heart before you vote.

When the frost is on the pumpkin...

My father in law, affectionately known as "Pap" sent this poem my way...his father used to quote this to him when he was a child...Whitcomb Riley is best appreciated when read aloud...try reading it to your kids...my crew thoroughly enjoyed it as they do their Pap.

"When the Frost is on the Punkin"

When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock,
And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin' turkey-cock,
And the clackin' of the guineys, and the cluckin' of the hens,
And the rooster's hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence;
O, it's then the time a feller is a-feelin' at his best, 5
With the risin' sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest,
As he leaves the house, bareheaded, and goes out to feed the stock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.

They's something kindo' harty-like about the atmusfere
When the heat of summer's over and the coolin' fall is here— 10
Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossoms on the trees,
And the mumble of the hummin'-birds and buzzin' of the bees;
But the air's so appetizin'; and the landscape through the haze
Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days
Is a pictur' that no painter has the colorin' to mock— 15
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.

The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn,
And the raspin' of the tangled leaves as golden as the morn;
The stubble in the furries—kindo' lonesome-like, but still
A-preachin' sermuns to us of the barns they growed to fill; 20
The strawstack in the medder, and the reaper in the shed;
The hosses in theyr stalls below—the clover overhead!—
O, it sets my hart a-clickin' like the tickin' of a clock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.

Then your apples all is gethered, and the ones a feller keeps 25
Is poured around the cellar-floor in red and yaller heaps;
And your cider-makin's over, and your wimmern-folks is through
With theyr mince and apple-butter, and theyr souse and sausage too!...
I don't know how to tell it—but ef such a thing could be
As the angels wantin' boardin', and they'd call around on me— 30
I'd want to 'commodate 'em—all the whole-indurin' flock—
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.

Sometimes I feel a bit...

DISCOMBOBULATED

(oh how I love this word!)

I pride myself in my organization...well, I USED to pride myself in my organization...but lately I am completely abandoning this concept of myself! Hey, it takes a great deal of thought and planning to juggle a busy family, right? Is it that I am just getting older? Am I completely LOSING it? Someone suggested I have a "new" disease called "KidsHeimers" which causes one to lose all practical thought. But, when I find myself putting my keys in the freezer, when I can't remember if it is Tuesday or is it Wednesday? When I look directly at one of my children and call them the wrong name...then remind them I know FULL WELL what their name is!!!

I say to you: "OY!!"

Every here and there...

I get one of those UNFORGETTABLE moments that are "priceless" with the kids. They can be so funny and plot and work to keep their mom hopping! Bob had a late night at work and when he isn't with us for dinner the kids will oftentimes eat at our breakfast bar. It was time for dinner and they all came running and sat down, five of them all in a row facing me on the other side of the counter. Suddenly with a cue from Mitchell (Sam included) they burst out singing in chipmunk voices:

"Don't cha wish your girlfriend was HOT like me!
Don't cha wish your girlfriend was a FREAK like me!"

Yes, they have watched ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS movie too many times! I laughed until tears were streaming down my face and then Sam insisted they do it at least three more times! If you haven't had the pleasure of seeing the movie...here is the scene that my five incredibly goofy BUT entertaining kids had to re-enact!

Hearing the Call...

Christians everywhere hear the call of God to adopt. God cares for the orphans and He leads His own children to care and protect them in the permanent embrace of adoption/family. It is not an easy road traveled but if called, one with many rewards and blessings.

I am going to take one day a week and post about a child known to me in need of a home. Most of these children are brought to my attention from other mothers that I network with through blogs and lists. When you see this child I ask that you join me in praying specifically for a family/home for that child. Thanks so much for lifting these precious children up to the Lord...his ultimate plan will be revealed to us in his good time.

This is Russ...doesn't he have the sweetest face and smile? He is three years old and looking for a family. Pray for him today will you please?

Before I was a mom...

Before I was a Mom,
I never tripped over toys
or forgot words to a lullaby.
I didn't worry whether or not
my plants were poisonous.
I never thought about immunizations.
Before I was a Mom,
I had never been puked on.
Pooped on.
Chewed on.
Peed on.
I had complete control of my mind
and my thoughts.
I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom,
I never held down a screaming child
so doctors could do tests.
Or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night
watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom,
I never held a sleeping baby just because
I didn't want to put her down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces
when I couldn't stop the hurt.
I never knew that something so small
could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom,
I didn't know the feeling of
having my heart outside my body.
I didn't know how special it could feel
to feed a hungry baby.
I didn't know that bond
between a mother and her child.
I didn't know that something so small
could make me feel so important and happy.
Before I was a Mom,
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night
every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth,
the joy,
the love,
the heartache,
the wonderment
or the satisfaction of being a Mom.
I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much,
before I was a Mom.

God's whisper...in a Mom's Chaos

Right at this VERY moment, my house is completely STILL...the only sound I can hear is that of Cinder, my 14 year old kitty purring in my lap. Three kids just left for school and Emma and Sam are sleeping in as we are headed to the orthodontist in a little while. On one level I relish the peace but the reality is that I so enjoy the constant banter (and many times bickering) of the kids as they move around the house.

I did a book study some time ago called, God's Whisper in a Mom's Chaos by Keri Wyatt Kent. The title alone had me completely hooked and then reading through it with some friends was pure inspiration. Sometimes I completely miss God's gentle whisper in my life and this is when things start to get a bit hairy. The harmony of my home starts to fall apart and it is as if we are all going in SEVEN COMPLETELY DIFFERENT directions! It is when I slow down and look UP that I realize that God is trying to guide me or in many cases KICK ME in the right direction and I am living in some oblivious state.

I get caught up in my lists and the many things it takes to keep a large family going and I am grateful for these reminders that I need to LISTEN.

A week in pictures...

Nate is "tearin' it up" with his cornet in the Homecoming parade! The band is in great shape and sounding excellent this year. Nate absolutely LOVES it!

Madeleine and Meg after a soccer game...they have had a fun year playing! Their Daddies are the coaches which makes it extra special!

Emma has had such fun cheer leading this fall. We have enjoyed the delightful weather that has come along with this football season. She is such a sweet girl!

Clarice always joins the kids in whatever outdoor games they play...here she is hanging with Emma in the top of our Play set...she is always happy to pose for a photograph.

Madeleine is enjoying first grade. She especially likes her spelling tests...they are all posted on the fridge right now. I don't know how many more weeks the fridge can handle...

Sam is Mitchell's buddy...Mitchell dressed up Sam in Nate's band uniform and Sam could hardly stand up! I love how much fun they are having! Just look at those grins!

Each morning the kids walk down our lane to wait on the school bus. I sit on the porch and enjoy their conversations and interactions as they wait. You cannot see Clarice in this photo as she is standing in front of Mitchell's saxophone case. She walks with them almost every day and then sadly stands at the end of the lane as the bus drives away. It is absolutely endearing.

Monday, Monday

After a busy and enjoyable weekend I woke up to another Monday...hmmmmm, feeling a bit tired this morning. We were so busy this weekend we didn't get our usual down time that we relish so much. I do so love a Sunday afternoon nap! Well, there is much to do so I gathered my list and Mr. Sam the Man and took a look at myself in the new full length mirror in my bathroom...

Maybe it is time for a makeover! Time to update my fall look!!
**Emma tells me that knee socks are IN!

Things to do:

Hello, my name is Jill, and I am a compulsive list maker. To many I am a FREAK, A NUT, A CRAZY PERSON but to me it is a thing of GREAT comfort...my lists. I have more than one list going all the time. The grocery list, the cleaning list, the project list, the Christmas list, shall I go on? No, I think not. My children look at each other with a knowing look because I say in a low monotone voice over and over "If it is NOT on the list it will not be picked up/purchased/finished/delivered/or accomplished!." That said, I have company coming in for the weekend and the list is quite long...I better get to it.
Have a wonderful Friday!

The old black kettle

I love old things...in fact I prefer to find a treasure second hand as I revel in what its past has been...whether it is an apron, a porch chair or a book I find in the bottom of a garage sale bin. Bob and I were married the same year that his grandparents moved from their LARGE family home to a retirement village. They had many pieces of furniture that they gave us that grace our home today...beautiful pieces that are now considered antiques. Bob's parents made a big move up to Maine early in 2007 and downsized their belongings quite a bit. They also gave us some lovely family pieces. One item that they did not take with them that I am quite fond of is an old, black kettle. It was purchased from an antique store in the 60's and had a home in Cleveland until going East to Reading in 1972...there it sat on Pap and Nana's front porch holding MANY colors and varieties of flowers. In spring of 2007 the Kinney Kettle made yet another trip cross country to Killeny Glen where it has settled nicely on the corner of our front sidewalk! We think it is a great addition to our landscape.

Pap wrote in his note regarding the kettle..."It may have originated in a Pennsylvania iron foundry and traveled to the Western Reserve in a covered wagon. Only the kettle knows and it has been silent for the 42 years we had it!"

Sam's Prayer

Sam prays each night before turning out the light, I look forward to this so much as I never know what he is going to say and the prayers of a sweet four year old is certainly praise to God.

Last Evenings' prayer:
"Dear Jesus,
Thank you for

no potty axe (accident)
paint (Brad the painter touched up our paint )
rocks (Sam got to throw rocks at the soccer park)
Grammy punk pie (Gram shared a pumpkin pie ~ Sam loves it)
swimmin'pool (Sam so enjoys swimming but it has been awhile since the pool was open)
Daddy's fast, red car (Sam loves to ride in his Dad's red car AND anything with wheels!)
In Jesus' name
Amen

The End."
